rake leaves, write poems

  • “Before you reach enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.
  • After you reach enlightenment,  chop wood, carry water.”
  • I rake the leaves in the front yard
  • And watch the neighborhood hawk glide hunting from tree to tree.
  • She is chopping wood and carrying water too.
  • (The branches of the bare trees are already red and purple with the buds of next year’s leaves.)
