Well, this is a fine kettle of fish. Woke up this morning to find Stinky the Stinkpad on the charger with his little fan just whirring away. I unplugged the strangely behaving device and tried to boot up– and got nothing. My obvious distress attracted the attention of the resident IT guy, who went into full diagnostic mode for several hours. His verdict– failing hard drive. No obvious reason for it to happen. It’s just failing. It may be possible to fix it, or it may not, and either way it will be a long, involved project. Unfortunately, I need a laptop, since it’s not always possible to do all the work that needs to be done (much less accomplish the required amount of messing around on the Internet) at my desktop.
So I have ordered another Stinkpad, the new X131e model that is an upgrade of the original (with a ruggedized hard drive, which can’t hurt.) I really like these laptops– they’re the perfect size, have great keyboards and the little red eraserhead pointer device and they are not shiny.
Needless to say I am not pleased with this, nor is the budget. All my essential data is backed up, and I’ve been told I might get some of it back anyway. And one way or another, we’ll get the original Stinky working again. If nothing else, we’ll put an SSD in him and resurrect him as a Linux project laptop. (Zombie Stinky!) Two laptops are better than none, I guess, or will be, but damn it, I really wanted a tablet.
