“Departing for the uplands (the tutor doubles as a pointer)”

Another visit with one of my favorite sketchbook characters, the young girl in a boy’s knickerbocker suit. In this case she is an aristocratic lady heading for the hunting field, accompanied by her tutor, who welcomes the chance to cast off his academic robes and take a run in the fresh air. Now that I think about it, he probably acts less like a pointer than a spaniel, locating the game birds and flushing them into flight for the hunters. I chose the word “pointer” for the sort of rhyming effect.
The object behind her right leg is supposed to suggest a crossbow. If I were doing a finished version of this drawing I would, of course, actually do some research. And yes, the Beast is my favorite X-Man.
